Need More Utah Concealed Weapons Permit Holders
The senseless killings of 6 and injuries to 14 more, in Tucson, Arizona on Saturday January 8th, dramatically illustrates the critical need in our country for more concealed weapons permit holders. This recent tragedy caused many Utahns to remember back to a similar local mass killing of 5 innocent victims, and the wounding of 4 others, which took place in 2007 at Trolley Square in Salt Lake City.
In response to this event, the Democratic House of Representative for North Carolina, Heath Shuler, has vowed to begin carrying a concealed handgun at public events. In addition, the Utah Republican House of Representative, Jason Chaffetz, also indicated that he would conceal carry more often.
In his book More Guns, Less Crime (1998), Dr. John Lott, who is a professor of criminal deterrence, law & economics at Chicago University, as well as a frequent writer for many national publications, states that:
- Felons are much more worried about running into armed victims than running into police.
- There is consistent strong evidence of the deterrent impact on violent crime by issuing concealed firearm permits.
- States experiencing the greatest reductions in crime are the ones with the fastest growing percentages of gun ownership. For every 1% increase in gun ownership, violent crime is reduced by 4.1%.
I truly believe that one of the most significant things that Utahns can do to help reduce violent crime is to get a Utah Concealed Weapons Permit. It is statistically shown to be a huge deterrent to criminals, and one of the most effective means to take responsibility for your own safety and that of your family.
